Calderdale way team

leg one
Phil West, Billy Martin
leg two
Gerry ONeill, Matt Moorhouse
leg three
Dave Milliken, Tarus Elly
leg four
Andi Jones, Cartl Hardman
leg five
Rob Hughes, Ray Edgar
leg six
Duncan Mason, Paul Birkett

Please try and make sure at least one of each pair has reckyed at least your leg
Dont blame me if you get lost............
Gerry O'Neill

Not sure about getting lost but I think Matt better bring a Thermos and a copy of the Sunday Times in his pack. Reckon he might have some time to kill waiting on me to descend.

BTW Duncan - after over a year of knee injuries, what better way to ease myself back into competition that hurtling down the side of some of the steepest terrain in Yorkshire. How considerate!

Is it because I made a flippant comment a while back about buying you some of John Browns moisturiser for Christmas in an attempt to reverse the cruel effects of passage of time? Surely that can't justify this blatant baptism of fire?

I feel like the proverbial Manx Kipper. With extra stitches.

Gerry (officially sh1tting it)
Gerry O'Neill

Just to clarify -

Voting for Leg 2 runners as those most likely to get lost is no reflection on Matts navigational skills but more an admission of concern on my part in terms of the following:

1. I won't be able to keep up.
2. I am short-sighted.
3. I regularly lose my car in car parks.
4. Without Satellite Navigation I would never make it home.
5. I point-blank refuse to ask directions (Alpha Male).
6. When people offer directions, I inherently mistrust them.
7. I feel a compelling urge to look at my feet when ascending.
8. I took a wrong turn at the Stanley Park relays in Blackpool last year.
9. I don't know what a compass looks like never mind how to use one.
10. Duncan has offered a reckky, so he's bound to get it wrong.

Believe me, I could go on.

G

P.S. I bet Matts really looking forward to this one with the prospect of Forrest Gump as his partner.
duncanjak

I dont think there'll be many people to ask directions from out there appart from the other teams who'll tell you your doing fine, when are we reckking it?
Gerry O'Neill

I thought Monday 11th would be ideal. Wink
Gerry O'Neill

Possible Dates:

Tues 28th Nov
Wed 29th Nov
Thurs 7th Dec
Fri 8th Dec

Let me know how you're fixed.

G

P.S. Having practically paid for your house extension with the number of treatments I've had this year, please tell me this isn't a clever ploy to boost the DM Retirement Fund.

<note to self: check exclusion clauses on Life Insurance policies>
roadrunner

That roadrunner is likely to get very lost after telling everyone he knows the route, no problems.

I have just purchased a TomTom navigation system for the car, just trying to set it up now. Hopefully it will work on the fells as well! Wink
NAVIGATOR

seems to be one option missing from the poll
ALL THE ABOVE
roadrunner

Gerry you Irish Wimp!!!!!!
You are on the shortest leg I think!!!!!
Gerry O'Neill

Roadrunner -

There is method in my madness.

You see, I reckon our distinguished Team Captain has a tendancy to change his mind more often than his underwear as far as team selections go. Suffice to say, it would not surprise me in the least if he took me on a reckky of Leg 2 (7 miles) then rang the night before feigning a heavy cold and asked me to swop with him on Leg 6 (11.5 miles). Or do both, for that matter.

So, if I put down a marker early in this discussion that I'm being hard done by, chances are I won't have to unplug the home phone and drop my mobile down the loo on the evening of 9th December in an attempt to avoid a potentially difficult conversation.

Gerry

P.S. I'm not really a girl, honest. Well, apart from weekends, of course.
Gerry O'Neill

Roadrunner -

I'm probably going to regret this whole debacle but that shot of you on the home page has just inspired me to order my first pair of fell running shoes (I think). Either that or it was the bottle of Rioja I've just consumed.

New Balance RX Terrain. Just goes to confirm that despite a lifetime of running, I still know absolutely bugger all about certain aspects of the sport. Will try them out on Rivington Pike this weekend if the rain stays off Rolling Eyes

To be honest, I'm just looking forward to putting my red vest on again and getting out there amongst it all. It's been a long time coming.

Gerry

P.S. If you get a minute, please could you give me a couple of tips on how to run quickly downhill without killing myself?
roadrunner

In the picture on the homepage I am wearing road shoes. The race was 7k, 4.5k uphill and 2.5k downhill.

Now you have a new pair of fell shoes why not come and run the Gravy Pud 5!!!!!
Gerry O'Neill

Err.....

They apparently need about 100M before they're broken in (at current mileage that will take about a month) and anyway, those ever helpful postmen have decided to go on strike again* in the run-up to Xmas so they probably won't arrive in time anyway. Shame really Crying or Very sad

G

* If Chris Davies read this forum, he would no doubt confirm this.
Gerry O'Neill

Roadrunner -

I wasn't joking about those tips btw!

G
duncanjak

so your a girl except at weekends
think I'm nearly as confused as you are Gerry

leg order not changed yet
BoroPaul

Bl***y hell, I'm in the A team again (at the moment). Where are all the proper runners?
I have learnt a bit more about running since last year though - so won't be wearing all my fell running gear at once, water proof coat, hat, gloves, water proof trousers, wind proof shirt, water proof socks etc etc etc, unlike last year. It certainly got a bit sweaty trying to keep up with Phil, which I failed to do. Hopefully I'll manage to keep our team captain in sight and will not let the side down this year.
And for the record i got lost on the Welsh castles relay. Sent Tarus the wrong way at Cross Keys (sorry again) and was asked for directions about the fell course by Carl at Cross keys before he got lost too.
Duncan do you know where we are going?
matt moorhouse

Calderdale way wanders

I hope gerry takes notes on the rekky of leg two, I have done this leg twice and twice gone wrong!
I guess we are a safe bet for getting lost.
There again, I have to get to the start line on time yet.

Matt
Gerry O'Neill

That's really encouraging Matt! I think it could well be a case of the blind leading the blind on this.

I'll bring my mobile and a few quid just in case it all goes really pear shaped. We can park ourselves in a local pub and declare our details to the Missing Persons Register. They're bound to find us eventually. If not, I'm sure my mortgage company will track me down in no time.

Roadrunner - those shoes I ordered arrived this morning but there seems to have been some sort of mix up.

I thought I was ordering running shoes and they've arrived with studs in the soles. Needless to say I've sent them back with a stern note to say I'm insulted that they've confused me with a footballer.

Gerry

Calderdale Relays

Regardng Team selection:-

I think the Captain has been very canny in the fact that on every leg except the 2nd there is one member of the team who ran their same leg last year. No pressure then! Perhaps Gerry and Matt should bring a Thermos and a newspaper after all or contact either John B or Billy B. Shocked
matt moorhouse

calderdale relay

Gerry
I'll bring my cash card, just a little worried that a few quid wont be suffice for our thirst. After all you never know how long we will be wandering the moors!
Gerry O'Neill

In that case Matt I'll wear my drinking boots instead of those silly studded shoes they've sent me.

Great, I'm actually quite looking forward to this now!

G Wink
Jarvis

How to win the Claderdale Relays

We will need...

1. A compass that actually works (Leg 2)
2. Duplicate numbers for Leg 3
3. A Quad Bike

The Plan....

Leg 1 (Phil & Billy)

Sorry lads, not much scope here I'm afraid. Too many eyes on us early doors. Suggest you do your best and maybe have a chat on the way round about what you'r egoing to spend your prize money on.

Leg 2 (Gerry & Matt)

Run for 10 minutes. Follow compass for co-ordinates of finish from this point. Arrive in new course record, chat briefly with the Halifax organisers about the exciting new mark and how they really should have credited it John B & Billy B when they broke it a while back. Allegedly. Leave in a hurry before too many awkward questions are asked and drive straight to within 200m of the finish of Leg 3 (but out of site), changing numbers on the way.

Leg 3 (Dave & Tarus)

Run for 10 minutes. Call Gerry & Matt on mobile. Turn back.
Gerry & Matt wait 20 minutes then run in to hand over to Andi & Carl.

Leg 4 (Andi & Carl)

Should have no problems here but would suggest Carl ties Andi's shoelaces together to ensure they finish at the same time.

Leg 5 (Rob & Ray)

Run for 5 minutes. Stop and pull on waterproof overgarments (disguising vests and numbers). Jump on previously inconspicuosly placed Quad Bike at foot of fells. Ascend in style, dismount, remove overgarments, descend at leisure.

Leg 6 (Duncan & Paul)

Basically, we'll be so far in front by now you two lads just need to ensure you don't get lost.

Job sorted.

Jarvis

P.S. Just read this back and have spotted a flaw. I'm relaxed that either Gerry or Matt will pass for Tarus at the Leg3/4 handover but quite concerned that we are asking a bit much from our friends on Leg 6.
Jarvis

We won't even need to know how to spell "Calderdale" either!

J Wink
roadrunner

If I were you I would read the October Issue of the FRA mag. The organisers are not impressed with people cheating, abusing marshalls and not complying with the rules. Anyone found not to have the correct kit, which is a FRA requirement, or not running in club vest will be DSQ.

I know a great set of legs and they are not mine!!!!!

I know leg 4 and only leg 4. I also intend to run it hard and fast.
duncanjak

it makes sense to have people running on legs they know, rank them, then rank the others and pair them up

Boropaul have you/ are you looking at leg 6?
John123

Boropaul told me on Sunday that Duncan was injured and he didn't know who he would be paired with.if Duncan couldn't run. He mentoned going to walk Leg 6 on Saturday to get familiar with it. I have offered to walk it with him (on Yahoo) but to date have not received a reply. I told him that, although I am not running, due to my knee injury I am walking pretty fast, so he would have company and also another head if he got lost. I am cycling with the Wheelers' too, but that would be no good on the Calderdale !!! Sad

Oh I forgot. I'm 72 tomorrow !!!

No Party tonight. Went out three other couples last Saturday to Francs, as in French restaurant. Good food, been there before. Very popular.
Staying in tonight to watch United.
Is everyone fit for Sunday? No last minute 'blips'?
I hope to be around the course on Sunday with Pete Budd and President Roy, if he gets home on Saturday from holiday okay.
Not had a go at the competition so far, but if Tarus is with Dave it will not be them. Last year Dave was praying for fog as he had done the same leg six times before and he said he knew it like the back of his hand.
Cheers.

Any ideas then? This is looking bad. We need to sort the team out for this asap so we can plan the weekend etc.

(Whats the big smoke? Is Duncan doing a fag advert or something?)
John123

Just seen duncan's message. You beat me to it Andi.
Suggest getting in touch with Hilbob and cockneychelseaboy to see if they have any ideas. Just when we think all is well it goes pearshaped.
Boropaul, will you now want to walk the 6th leg?
John123

Racing

Andi
Since my last message I have rung Bob who is looking after the B team and he knew about the problem late last night. However, he was going to ring Duncan this morning, so now knowing that he cannot be reached, he has suggested that Sean McMyler and Mick Higginbottom come in on Leg 3. Mick has run it before and knows the leg. Bob will try to contact them and will also contact Paul Simons this afternoon to see if he has any ideas that can be conveyed to Duncan on his return from the Big Smoke. Is that Woodbine in New York state?
Hope all this will help
John123
Bone

I'm not 100% for sunday either.
I got injured running on the track on tues and have come down with a bad cold, so I haven't ran since tues.
Gonna get out for a run tomorrow so I'l keep you's posted on how I get on.
duncanjak

just got back from big smoke dont worry Andi this is what normally goes on behind the scenes just giving you a taste of the life of a team organiser!
duncanjak

leg one phil/bill
leg two Matt/ BoroPaul you just need to recky 2nd half from Lumbutts to finish
leg three Sean+
leg four Andi + ???Carl
leg 5 Rob/Lee
leg 6 Duncan/Tarus

is this looking slightly better not sure.....
roadrunner

Not looking good at all then is it. Carl, get your big fat arse out of that door, over hartshead Pike and back via Dovestones. That will see if you are well enough for the CWR. If you can stand up after it then you will be fine!!!!!!

I am sure all will be well. I am going to train hard on Saturday as well Carl so it will be a good paced run but nothing like murder.

Does Tomas Abyu not fancy a run out? It is a team event after all.
roadrunner

Plus, is Duncan suffering from a sleep problem posting at 2am!!!!!!

I've just been out for a run. I lasted about a minute and half before turning back coughing my lungs up.
Best I can do is try again in the morning but if i'm the same as i am tonight there's no chance i'l be running.
roadrunner

Bone my advise to you, for what it is worth, is dont even think of running the CWR. Its not worth killing yourself on when you are already ill and run down. Rest a few days and then start back steady running. Someone else can drop in for you. I just wish them the best of luck as I was thinking of running the route fast!!!!!!!

If you think you will be at Stage 2 start too early, I can pick you up between 7.30 and 7.45 as I will be passing on the M60 on my way there with Pete Budd. He knows where you live so when you get back from Todmorden just give me a ring. After Leg 1 finishes we will be going on to the end of Leg 2 and all stages to Leg 6. If you have made no arrangements to get home, you could come with us if you are in no rush and if you feel up to it. Let me know. John123 Tel. 0161 437 0648

Looking negative with ???? in places of some runners. We cant run the event with ?????. I appreciate the hard work you are putting in Duncan.

Have they sent maps out or shall I grab mine off the shelf now as I pack my stuff up? Dont forget, a requirement of the race is to have the cirrect equipment. This means both runners need everything on the stated lists. Thats a map each, photocopies usually do and a compass each. They are going to be very strict and check all runners and could check you t the end of your leg if they feel the need to. They have the right to to ensure that the event is ran to the FRA safety standards and to ensure that people are equipped for the conditions and terrain.
hilbob

Sid is running leg 2 for the 'B' team and lives close to Paul and could give him a lift. Sid will ring Paul.

John - 'B' team may require Dominic to run leg 3 if Paul Mc can't run.
Dominic has no transport and lives in the centre of Manchester, any chance of picking him up and bringing him to the start of leg 3 if required. May also require a lift back to Manchester.

John123
roadrunner

Everyone seems aware of the score regarding the kit regs. Spoke with Lee Dun about it earlier on and he informs me that Duncan has some spare stuff ie compass and whistle. If people really need anymore I suggest we share it from runers on other legs. It will delay your start if you try and take kit from runners handing over to you as you will then have to queue to get it checked by the marshalls.

This race could be coming to end according to aticles i the Fellrunner mag and on the Fellrunner website becuase Mrs Crabtree, the main lady of the event, is getting bothered about the complaints she gets about cheating and runners giving abuse to marshalls. Please bear this in mind tomorrow.
BoroPaul

last leg report

thanks to out superb supporters we saw you all over the course,

leg 6 report:
after a steady start we picked off one team and were doing along ok, after about 30 mins my lack of fitness started to tell, we kept going at Andi Jones slowest run pace-1. Then Mark slipped and fell heavily on some flag stones winding himself, we lost a place at this stage, he recovered and I grovelled up the big hill we lost a further one, then we picked it up ok after the climb until Mark fell even more heavily on concrete again needing stop for 2-3 mins more, we limped into the finish for pie and peas......

thanks Mark for last minute stand in you did say you were enjoying it up until the second fall

well done to all in getting 2 teams round

CALDERDALE LEG 1 REPORT

Great start left my car at Crag vale swaped into james car, kit check all seemed well arrived at start in plenty of time then realised that some stupid runner (ME) had left vest in my car. went and picked up vest got to start in time then off we went some runners seemed to be attempting a new world record not for ten mile but 400 meters. Me and Billy set off steady up the first climb in shorts and vest (bloody freezing) hit the top and the wind /rain (even more freezing) and started to make our way past all the 400 meter runners and into a good battle with Pudsey and Skipton after pulling away from Pudsey going into Riponden Billy had to stop and tie his lace with numb hands (not easy), regained ground on Pudsey then caught Skipton again. Pudey showed thier strength over the last 3 miles ,then 1 1/2 mile from the finish Billy out of nowhere found a kick we flew past Skipton and down to the last section steep slipery stone and sild the last 1/2 mile with eyes closed to the bottom then raced in to finish. Thanks for all tte organisation and support CHEERS PHIL.

Race report from leg four- Firstly, thanks to Paul Barrett (SHM) for stepping in to the team at very short notice. (I had to wake him up at 8am!!!!) From then on he ran around, had breakfast andmet me for the trip to Halifax. We set off in good spirits. Having a laugh and a joke on the way. Thing was Paul had ballet shoes on and not fell shoes!!!!!! He didnt like the terrain, wasnt happy with the weather and more importantly was tired from running the GMXC race the day before. But, not wanting to let me down in my hour of need he steped in. (He did say he wanted some girls number from the club for running but I hadnt a clue of who he was going on about!) In the end I lost count of how many people passed us. All I know is if it wasnt for Paul we would have been well stuck.

Thanks to Duncan for all his eforts this last few week. It can not be an easy job sorting a team out for this event. Many thanks.

leg 2 report

HI All
Leg 2 - apologies for any inaccuracies as this is the way I remember the leg unfolding.
Billy and Phil came in to Cragg Vale still going strongly and in a very handy race position. Pumlani and me set off up to the reservoir at a steady pace. We soon hit open country where there was a bit of a breeze and the odd spot of freezing cold rain. We passed a couple of teams, only to lose one place as we approached Stoodley Pike. Pumlani descended briiliantly managing to combine nifty footwork with a bit of slipping as he was wearing racing shoes. We made it to the bottom and Pumlani pushed the pace on a bit in order to try to close the gap to the team in front and I tried to hang on to him as best I could. We then think we lost a place going through Mankinholes. We dropped down in to Todmorden and then on the long steady climb up out of Todmorden towards the finish at Centre Vale Park we passed another team. We then picked the pace up as best we could on the steepish descent to the finish in more or less the same race position as we'd started. Cheers to Pumlani for being an excellent race partner, Duncan and Bob for organising the teams and of the course the excellent supporters on the course.

A footnote. My head really is ok - I banged my head on a tree on the way round and grazed it a bit. I didn't even realise that it had been bleeding and it certainly looked worse than it was. thanks to everyone that asked if I was ok.

Three Supporters' Report.
Thoroughly good day chasing round the Calderdale relays.
Absolutely top class entertainment.
I was acting as Chauffeur over mostly roads I knew from last year. Roy who thought he would be able to have a Pub lunch on the way round was sadly mistaken and finished up like a navigator at my side directing me over the roads I didn't know. Your title is under threat Phil! Peter took up a new occupation - delivering cars from place to place instead of letters. The difference being that he hadn't a clue where he was going and was hanging on to my coat tails around the Pennine Highlands. Great sport and great to see everyone giving it there all. Sorry we couldn't see much of the B team as the cars were needed on time so that the recipients wouldn't die up there of hypothermia.
Roy needn't have worried about food as I always go over stocked because of my Diabetes. I had enough for the three of us!!
Great moment on the Canal bank near the finish with Rob, Tarus and Billy when Duncan and Mark came into view.
Well done everybody.
Can we hear how some of the B team fared?

Cheers

John123
date&walnut

A big thank you to everyone for all their hard work to make yesterday happen. A fantastic experience. Our leg ended up as a mass start. Best moment - leading(!!) at least 6 pairs of runners across a field - all of which had obviously no idea of the route. Tony said his best moment was the last 2 yards!
