Calderdale Way Relays

Calderdale Way Relays take place on Sunday 9th December. Same format as usual. First we need to decide if we are entering a team or teams? I think we should at least get one entry in asap to ensure we do not miss out as it fills up very quickly and they do not take extra teams.

Then lets decide who knows which legs and how the team might look.
I know leg 4 and wil be happ to run leg 4 on the day.
Bone

i would do a leg if we're gonna make a real effort to get a team out.

Bone wrote:

Team effort? We can only piss with the cocks we have!!!!! (Ken Chapman saying that stuck with me) If people don't want to run then so be it. I will do a leg no matter what.
NAVIGATOR

What legs does JB know? Rob? Which legs have you done Carl?
admin

I notice you're getting started pretty early this year Jonesy, think it's time Salford won it.

JB did leg 2 in 2005 (Andi - the year you and Tomas went the wrong way, if you need reminding) along with Billy Burns

I think Rob did Leg 5 with Phil Leybourne in both 05 and 06

You hit the nail on the head there Bone. Hopefully we can get a full, competitive mens team out. I want us to aim at winning it. I know it means nothing in the long run of things, but it's something we should have put to bed a long time ago. Like we did with the Welsh Castle relays many moons ago.

I did once actually meet a lady in Salford, but becuase this forum is visited by young people like me, I will not tell you what she asked me and offered me!!!!
supermum

good luck getting your competitive mens team then. but shouldn,t you be concentrating more on the northern and national relays first. i know why not use the cross keys as a trial? Laughing as for no ladies in salford. say that to our faces!!! Mad

Not sure if Phil will be running but i'll certainly do leg 5.
BoroPaul

Hi All
As Vin said I am due to have minor op next week. I am hoping the enforced rest will do me some good. I do intend to be running again by December, but it is probably best to discount me at the moment and for me to be a possible reserve. Apologies for not being able to commit.

For the record if I can run I am willing to do any leg - although have done leg 1 (with Phil W) in 2005 and leg 2 with Pumlani last year

Paul
duncanjak

It's someones lucky day. Carl is away that weekend so we need someone to take his place. Lots of time to sort it out. Northerns and National relays before to focus on.
NAVIGATOR

Hi roadrunner, have you had chance to look at the route changes and are they drastic
roadrunner

Are the route changes not all on leg 6?
I am sure they have made this leg safer now.
I believe the rest of the legs are the same.
Any information in the pack vinber?
duncanjak

does that mean i've got to recky it, think route finding not high up on my list of skills at the moment
vinber

route changes are in the pack - Bob Towell has got it -
roadrunner

Bob, Can you send us the pack over to look at?
Andi
date&walnut

Info is now also on Halifax website, aside from leg 6, major change appears to be having to WALK through stableyard on leg 2 - incurs a 5 min penalty if caught running!
roadrunner

Simple horses. Chop the horses up for the pies at the end!
date&walnut

No, just need to make sure we've got our 2 best looking runners on leg 2 so they don't frighten the horses!
NAVIGATOR

Most runners are knackered by this point and are walking anyway!
duncanjak

best looking runners? better move jb to different leg, athough they may think he is another horse
NAVIGATOR

Jimmy Kovacs is running very well and is interested in running a leg.
duncanjak

Leg 1 Phil W+ Pumlani
Leg 2 John B + Matt Moorhouse
Leg 3 James Kovacs+ Tarus
Leg 4 Andi+Johnny G
Leg 5 Rob+Phil L
Leg 6 Duncan + James Jackson

All the above have agreed to run appart from Johnny who said he would have run for his 'fell club' last year with sufficient notice will ask him this week and James Jackson, -----Tomas, Matt Shaw and Billy not asked yet.
vinber

Discussions at last committee meeting left me with the impression that runneres could only represent " 1st claim fell club" is that correct ?
roadrunner

Sure is correct. First claim runners only. No second claim runners. All our runners on the list are first claim?
vinber

If Phil L is Phil leybourne you'd better check with Hilary.
roadrunner

Think he stayed first claim after chatting with duncan.
duncanjak

you can choose your first claim fell club eg. Paul Green Sale will be representing Horwich, Nick Leigh Alti for Pudsey.
duncanjak

Matt Shaw available for first leg

Leg 1 Phil W+ Matt Shaw
Leg 2 John B + Matt Moorhouse
Leg 3 James Kovacs+ Tarus
Leg 4 Andi+(Johnny G)
Leg 5 Rob+Phil L
Leg 6 Duncan + (James Jackson)

Pumlani needs slotting in somewhere

Jackson/ Johnny to confirm

Tomas & Billy to be considered still
James K unable to recky so we need to take Tarus round a couple of times
roadrunner

Is Gilby second claim for us?
His he able to run on the fells?
No Tomas?
roadrunner

This might be of interest to some.

Abyu- would like to go and watch!! that makes him reserve

Cox interested but unconfirmed

think we need to get Dave Lockett on board too, any chance Phil? MFEM Simons could be another possibility or Paul Birkett

Andi may be good to take JG on recky so he understands properly what hes doing, hes up 4 it.

You may have seen my xc race yesterday well its a start think i can keep it going for 12 miles, just no speed not surprising if you havent run fast for 2 years i suppose!
roadrunner

Is Coxy first claim for us on the fells?
Will make contact with Gilby this week and either set up a run over that way for sunday or get him over here and take him on the fells round here. I know the route well so dont really need to recce it. (Remember last time I said I know the route!!!!! (I bet Tomas does!!))
NAVIGATOR

Just spoken with dave lockett, he is interested in running but is getting over a tendon injury and dont want to commit 100% untill he has pushed training and it holds up.
NAVIGATOR

Iv'e twisted Billy Martin's arm to run. He would like leg 1.
roadrunner

Leg 1 Phil W+ Billy Martin
Leg 2 John B + Pumlani
Leg 3 James Kovacs+ ??
Leg 4 Andi+ Johnny G (JG is not certain yet)

Dave Lockett- subject to his injury and update from him
Billy Burns- ? ? ?
Tomas Abyu- We know you like the mud Tomas
Paul Simons-
Paul Birkett-

Anyone I have missed off?
BoroPaul

HI All

I am still recovering - and should only really be conisdered in an absolute emergency as I'm not doing much running so will be even slower than usual.
Anyone contacted James Jackson?

Cheers
BoroPaul
BoroPaul

HI

Having read the team (again) I see that James has indeed been contacted!
Apologies

BoroPaul

For this event, all competitors must carry full kit.

(Taken from Halifax Harriers Website)

Full body cover is mandatory and checks will be made at the start and finish of each leg. Each runner must carry cagoule, over-trousers, hat, gloves, relevant maps, compass and whistle. If any runner is found not to be in possession of ALL the above items, their en-tire team will be disqualified.

They check each runner before the leg. It's part of the checking in process. We can share equipment between leg runners i.e leg 1 could give equipment to leg 3 runners, but giving equipment to leg 2 runners will not be possible. I am sure most of us have this equipment at home, but lets start discussion on what we need/who needs what so I can dig out spares from home.
Bone

whats the plan for the recce this weekend?
i'l probably come along for a run.
Rob

Chris heys is organising the reccy im doing this weekend. The plan is for everyone to meet at birch services on the M62 at 9. Then some drive to the start of leg 4 and set off and some drive to the end of leg 5 and run it backwards(hopefully meeting around the start of leg 5) then we run leg 5 together the right direction. Speak to greeny cos last time i spoke to him he was still going.
Bone

will do cheers
roadrunner

Leg 4- 9.5 miles
Leg 5- 7.5 miles
Total- 17 miles

I would be interested in this (running both legs) and maybe even Jonny Gilby.

Can you keep us informed please Bone?

You are looking at 2 hours to run both these legs together. A cracking Sunday run.
Bone

greeny and raven are doing it as well. i'l ring greeny tomorrow and see what he's planning. Should be a good sunday run for sure.
roadrunner

Give us a ring Bone sometime in the next few days.
Cheers
roadrunner

Great run yesterday. Was good to be back on leg 4 and then to run leg 5. I was blowing out of my arse at the end of it. (Think that might have had something to do with lack of dinner on saturday evening.) A nice dusting of snow had fallen at Blackshaw Head when we arrived, but soon lifted. Course was very very very wet, but the going was still good.

Everyone alright still for Sunday 9th December? Are people coming along to watch, support and drive cars from start of legs to the end etc?
John123

Calderdale Relay

Wouldn't miss it for the world!! Great fun although now too old and too slow to run it!!
Has the team been formalised for leg 4 yet Andi? Just in case you have to be shown the way!! Note on the Yahhoo Group site that Billy did 52.20 in the Preston 10 yesterday; posted by our statistician Roy Proffit this morning. Hope we can put up a good show with everyone turning out.
John 123
roadrunner

Noted Billy Burns time at Preston.
Waiting for him to contact Duncan. Hopefully soon.
I know leg 4 like I know the back of my hand. (Lets see if I do know it on race day!!!!) Didn't make one mistake yesterday.
NAVIGATOR

we are going round leg one on sunday if leg one mixed team want to tag along. How is mixed team looking.
hilbob

'B' Team complete but still juggling runners with legs!!!!

At present we have -

Leg 1 - Dave T and Paul McN
Leg 2 - Bob T and Julie L
Leg 3 - Ruth B and Pat C
Leg 4 - Dennis M and Mark E
Leg 5 - Joanne A and Jane B
Leg 6 - Paul M and Anneka S

We have reserved runners in the wings and we are confident we will have a mixed team i.e. 6 ladies and 5 men.
Legs 5 and 6 were recce'd on Sunday. Leg 4 will be done on 2nd December and Leg 1 yet to be decided.
roadrunner

You should have come with us to recce leg 4 last Sunday. You will miss the Gravy Pud 5 if you go on Sunday 2nd December!!!!!!

Leg 4 does have one or two difficult sections to navigate but mainly involves running east. Have you seen the maps Chris Heys added to the route descriptions? Very very useful if you are not sure of the route.
hilbob

calderdale

Not sure about running with you roadrunner we recc'd leg 6 on Sunday 10.3miles in 1hr 55min but we do know where we went wrong.
Not sure how to open Chris Heys maps please advise.

Navigater - Paul will not be reading this I will ask him to contact you - Dave will read the e mail and make contact.
roadrunner

Each of these links will open a map and instructions. Hopefully it will make sense to you and be a good resource for you. (Thanks to Chris Heys for the files)

The maps are good, 'cos although they print out onto a couple of pages it means the map is a more enlarged version of the OS map. The other thing I've found handy is using Asda/Tesco resealable freezer bags to put the maps in to stop them getting wet. A4 page will fit in a medium size one if you just fold the end of the page over a bit, just put the pages in back-to-back. The medium size freezer bag will also get a whole OSmap in, if you fold it right. If anyone wants a demo let me know!

Calderdale Relays

It has gone a little quiet on the team news front recently.
What is the position?
Have we got every Leg covered?
Have all the legs been reconnoitred?
Are we ready to roll?

Leg 2 john knows like his own.....
Leg 4 and 5 known by runners doing them and Duncan knows leg 6.

Please note kit requirements for this event.

John123

Calderdale Way Relays

How sick is this? 0.20am!
Thanks for the team set up Andi. As you say we will hopefully get everyone out. However, I'm always a bit nervous when I see (TBC) beside one of the names!
Good to see that Bob and Julie have got a mixed team together.

Bed Beckons.

John123
roadrunner

TBC is for Burns only, John is defo. Hopefully the TBC can be removed from his name soon.
John123

Calderdale Way Relays

Realised that the the TBC applied to Billy Burns only, but your reply that this would be removed soon still makes me nervous. After all the race is only just over a week away. What does soon mean? Is every effort being made to get him to the line? My mind goes back to seeng them come in at Todmorden after their record breaking run, absolutely flying?

Quote:
Leg 3- James Kovacs and Matt Moorhouse- Unknown to runners!

What, you're not serious! What's the chance that we're in the lead at the end of leg 2? Leg 3 might be short, but there's still plenty of places to go wrong/loose time working out the route. There was only 19 secs separating 1st and 2nd last year!
John123

Calserdale Way Relays

Good point regarding Leg 3. Is there no way that one or the other of James or Matt can recce the route before the date? Would be a pity if we lost it again through bad route finding.
Have, since my last posting, heard that JB has re- familiarised himself with Leg 2 and that BB is a certain runner.
Only Leg 3 to go now.
John123.

Andi shall I place Pumlani on stand by........

Now don't all groan at this suggestion. But if you definitely wan't Jimmy/Matt to run (being the fastest option), what about someone else running the route before the 9th with a digi camera and taking a few photos along the route, espec at the tricky bits like path junctions, or just general landmarks. You could then email them the photos, tell them which point on the map/route description they were taken and at least they'd have a better idea where they have to go.

Time will come from? Ideally we could get one of them out there to have a look at the course, but it is looking like it wont happen. The camera idea is good but has anyone the time for it?

Duncan, I havent got a number of Pulami.
JB

JB here, I wouldn't normally get on this bandwaggon, but I can't believe what i'm reading. If Matt or Jimmy don't know the route they shouldn't do it. I'm just thinking back to 2000 with I ran first leg with Billy came back with 5 min lead only to see it completly wasted on the next leg because we thought we knew the route. Bingley had a good laugh at our expense that day and they would have another one if they saw Matt studying photographs at the start.
I drove a round trip of 60miles, and went out to make myself completly sure of the way for my leg. I knew it anyway, I just wanted to make sure sure I remembered all the points where you can save a few seconds. The weather was freezing rain and gale force winds but I thought it important enough to do it.
With a couple of awesome legs and 4 steady legs we can easily win this race, I believe we have the 12 best aggregate runners but only if we all run the proper route. If either Matt or Jimmy can't get out to look at the course then I fear we could just be canon fodder for another Bingley after race group drinking piss taking session.
John123

Calderdale Way Relays

Just adding my twopenny worth. Regarding Leg 3. I agree with JB and Date and Walnut. A Recce is a must if the two runners have never been over it. Surely there must be some part of the next week for one of them to spare a couple of hours to do that. I would be prepared to provide transport for such a venture if that is the problem for either of them, weekend or weekday. I can remember Dave Milliken at Todmorden waiting for John and Billy to come in on their record run saying " I wish it was foggy, cos I know this Leg 3 like the back of my hand!!" What if its foggy on the 9th Dec.?
Any comments Duncan and Andi?
John123
date&walnut

A J Kovacs is on the results that year running with Dave M on leg 3(2002)!!!!!!

Sorry not same year as John and Billy record run, but he has run it, apparently.
John123

Calderdale Way Relay

Let's hope Jimmy has a good memory then and that there have been no slight changes to the course as on other legs. Still think every effort should be made to do a recce. John123
roadrunner

Lots of comments here. Shame I didnt get chance to log in last night.
Jimmy has ran leg 3 before but is concerned it was such a long time ago now. It might all come flooding back to him when he starts to run the leg and then again, it might not! If Jimmy or Matt do get time to check it out great, or the only other option is that we load leg three with as much support as possible to ensure they go the right way at important turning parts. The leg is only five miles, so with enough support on route it might be possible to pull off. Other option might be to change thse two runners round to someone who has time to check out the route, but would they be as fast, or would this be offset by knowing the route?
date&walnut

If you want to beat P&B and Bingley, you've got to beat them at their own game, and that involves knowing the route and no mistakes. I think it'd be better to have slower runners who know the route, time gain/loss on this leg for any team (who know the route) is only going to be in the region of 30secs to 1min, as opposed to the the longer legs where it could be a couple of minutes. One final comment, the 'B' team managed to recce this leg in under an hour and a half and we were chatting, none of us has broke 50mins for 10k this year. John123's offer of help could be worth it's weight in gold especially if it means first place!
John123

Wondered where you were last night Roadrunner!! Have you spoken to Jimmy and Matt recently? Is there not one half day spare for them to do this recce if it is the difference between winning and losing? It will be a 'downer' on the first two Leg runners if they have this lack of preperation for Leg 3 on their minds and a bigger 'downer' for the later Leg runners if they go wrong. My offer of any help, short of running, still stands. Give them a good talking to Roadrunner and get one or both of them out on this short but necessary task. See you on Sunday morning to taste the Gravy!! John123
NAVIGATOR

bob t says dave townsend ran this leg last year for b team. i went round leg one with him on sunday and he is running very well at the moment.
roadrunner

Maybe a substitution is required.  Is Dave Townsend on the B team?
hilbob

Yes Dave is on the 'B' but we have reserves ready to step in so he can move if required, dont now if Dave has used the Forum but I will e-mail and check he is OK with leg 3 if this helps.
roadrunner

I think we need ot make this choice now in order to inform Dave and Jimmy or Matt about our team change.  Can you advise when you have heard back from Dave T and then we can discuss who he should run with.  I might still be that Matt Moorhouse and his ribs are not up to anyway.
