19th UKA British Fell and Hill Relays 2007I was asked last night about the Fell and Hill Relays which we took part in last year. Several people, myself included, would probably rather forget about last years event looking at the style in which I finished. I haven't been that ill since. John Brown had to drag me round and push me up the hills. I think he was just about the start carrying me!!!!
Anyway, in answer to what I was asked last year, this years event is on Saturday 13th October at The Forest of Bowland. The Forest of Bowland is situated in the north west of England and is designated an area of outstanding natural beauty, covering 808 sq km of rural Lancashire and North Yorkshire.
Race starts at 10.30am (GR 599 445 on sheet 41). There wil be space around the start/finish field to errect club tents etc. Car Parking is limited and is charged at £1 per car carrying 4 people and £3 per carrying less than 4 people.
All runners must have experience of competing in fell races and aged over 18 years old. Each team consists of 6 runners and each runner can run one leg only. FULL KIT MUST BE CARRIED BY ALL RUNNERS AND THE SHARING/SWAPPING OF KIT IS NOT PERMITTED. Club vests must be worn by all runners. Non compliance with rules will result in teams being DSQ.
Entires need to be received by 3rd Septemer, but limited to 130 teams on a first come first serevd basis. Cost of entry is £48 per team. Categories are Mens open, Veteran Men over 40 and Ladies.
The route is all contained on OS Map sheet 41, Forest of Bowland and Ribbleside.
Leg 1 is the only partially marked route. Legs 2, 3 and 4 require navigational skills with each leg traversing rough open fell with steep ascents and descents. The competiton area covers a variety of terrain including rough grass, heather, bracken, peat bog and rock. Legs 2,3 and 4 are designed to give a number of route choices between check points and much of the routes are not on recognised paths.
Leg 1 4.75m/2000' Estimated winning time 45 mins (Solo Leg)
Leg 2 7m/2800' Estimated winning time 65 mins (Pairs)
Leg 3 6m/1900' Estimated winning time 60 mins (Pairs)
Leg 4 3.5m/2000' Estimated winnng time 40 mins (Solo Leg)
S, thats all the details. Now, who is up for rnning round the moors, lost, in fog, rain or even snow for 13 hours????? I am not sure if I will be available as I am intending to run the Dublin Marathon on 29th October so would need to discuss this event and see how it fits in, or doesn't ft in, with final preparations for the marathon. Either way I can be around.
Discussion needed.
